Statement
For my first knitwear collection, I invite you into a butterfly rave daydream. During the period of change from student to professional, I reflected on why I create what I do, and I had a revelation. The things I love most, knitting and raving, both give me escapism from the stresses of normal life. My passions come together to allow you to escape too with the Trance_Form collection.
Trance_Form explores the process of metamorphosis through knit ravewear pieces. The butterfly has been used to symbolise the freedom and process of change the raver goes through throughout the night. Photographs of butterfly wings are digitally distorted and printed onto the knitwear, while the knit techniques reflect the shapes and textures found on the insect.
The garments are modular and are constructed for easy disassembly. Only natural materials are used so that they will biodegrade and enrich the soil, and the metal fastenings can be re-used. Merino wool and silk yarns are used for their luxurious handle and breathable qualities. Merino wool provides heat regulation so the raver can dance all night long, while the silk gives a transcendental lustre. When the garments have come to the end of their lives, they can be easily deconstructed and composted. The pieces are hand dyed with natural dyes, removing the risk of toxic dyestuffs leaking into the water. The collection works with what nature gives us, allowing us to feel truly free on the dancefloor.
Laddering and lace stitch techniques are used for added breathability, and also mimic the patterns of the butterfly. Dye techniques and screen-printed elements are used to create dreamy kaleidoscope effects on the body. I pushed the capabilities of the domestic knitting machine to create a contemporary range of knitted ravewear for the responsible raver. This collection is a sign of hope for a more sustainable and harm-free textile industry.
